Real Pianos at the Tabard Inn

Real Pianos at the Tabard Inn

The Tabard Inn is a special place. The dark corners, overstuffed cozy furniture, period decorations, and real fireplace (you know, actually burning real wood) make it feel like you’ve stepped into a old travelers’ inn somewhere just outside of Dublin in the early 1900’s. No one had Irish accents and it didn’t smell like whisky, but even while serving brunch and offering wifi, The Tabard Inn still comes from a different time. What does every place like this need (at least in my eyes)? A piano or two! Which is what makes the Tabard Inn extra special 🙂 I played both pianos (rooms 24 and 26) for a wedding and reception last weekend and look forward to going back soon! If not to play, at least to have brunch …   It was a small room,...

Piano Music for Silent Movie

Piano Music for Silent Movie

Last month I had the treat (and challenge) of accompanying a silent film on piano. The event was a book signing for a new graphic novel called Bluffton by Matt Phelan. The movie was Buster Keaton’s The General from 1926, which lasts 75 minutes and is thoroughly entertaining! I arranged the score using mostly pieces from the Civil War era, when the film took place. Never having done anything like this before, I didn’t have much of a plan but as I watched the movie and tried playing over it, I realized that having themes would make good sense. I designated four themes total: the protagonist, the fair maiden, the Confederates and the Union soldiers. When any of these characters was precarious situation, I played a minor version of their theme (which...

Wedding Reception at the Capitol Hill Club

Wedding Reception at the Capitol Hill Club

A wedding reception last month brought me the privilege of playing at the magnificent Steinway at the Capitol Hill Club. Now that we have our own 7′ Baldwin, it isn’t often that I find myself at other pianos of equal or higher caliber than what I’m used to playing at home! This was an exception. I really enjoyed the mellow touch, strong resonance, and overall amazing dynamic depth that comes with concert grands. Strangely, a little sign next to the piano indicated that was only 6′ 10″, which is clearly not the case. Not wanting to make a complete fool of myself, I didn’t try to measure it in front of the wedding guests, but it looks pretty close to a concert grand (around 9′). Definitely longer than our 7′ Baldwin....

Frost Advisory is thrilled to be back at Alexandria’s Old Town Theater this Friday, July 26 at 8pm. We had a marvelous jazz show last week, and will be playing mostly the same tunes this time – with a few adjustments. Well … our set list will be mostly the same, but we’ll see what actually happens 😉 Our next show at Old Town after this week will be September 5, and there’s already an Old Town Theater Jazz Night Groupon available for that. Also, come say “hi” on our new Facebook profile!...
