Extracurricular Music at John Adams in Alexandria

»Posted by on Jan 29, 2014 in Concerts, Music Reflections | 0 comments

The Alexandria Symphony Orchestra (ASO) and John Adams Elementary School are launching a program of music education inspired by el Sistema, which has enriched the lives of thousands of children beginning in Venezuela and now, through private funding, in schools in dozens of cities throughout the United States. Last month, John Adams Elementary hosted a week-long workshop for local students to get a taste of the music program. For part of the final concert, the organizers brought in an older el Sistema-inspired student group from Baltimore, the OrchKids, who have been playing together for five years. Seeing the kids was amazing. Each group of student musicians had matching t-shirts, and they beat sticks together on overturned buckets creating different tones and...

Once Upon A Time Shop – Musical

I had the pleasure of performing with Bible Stories Theater of Alexandria, VA. The musical was Once Upon A Time Shop, and featured a handful of kids and a couple of adult roles. We performed at the Old Town Theater and my accompaniment was solo piano. The children portray orphans at a turn-of-the-century clock shop, run by Ms. Winifred Curmudgeon – a stingy woman who is finding herself past her prime with nothing to show for it. The children discover that one of the clocks – the Grandfather Clock – speaks! He offers the children advice on how to deal with their difficulties and how to love Ms. Curmudgeon. By the end of the show (running time was about an hour), the kids have learned more about living and loving while Ms. Curmudgeon has let go of...

A Weekend at the Old Town Theater

I had the pleasure of playing at Alexandria’s newly restored Old Town Theater last weekend. For each show (two on Friday, two on Saturday), I played the “walk-in set” for about half an hour before showtime, a quick jingle as each act was introduced, and a quick “walk-out” piece. The host was Mark Matusof and he introduced magicians Karen Beriss and Osmar, before the main act, Chris Barnes from Milwaukee. Having been re-opened in December 2012, the Old Town Theater is poised to return as a popular venue in downtown Alexandria. It’s almost 100 years old, and although much of the specific history has been lost of the years, immediately upon entering you know that you’re in a real vintage place. The second floor has a bar and...
