Jazz Duo for Birthday Party

Tessa and I had a great time last weekend playing through a good portion of our jazz repertoire as background music for an 80th birthday party. The birthday boy, his wife, and a couple of dozen lifelong friends and guests all enjoyed a best-in-class dinner at Joe’s Crab House while we provided atmosphere and ambiance – and then stuck around for some food of our own!! Big thanks to the hosts for having us...

Piano at The Willard Hotel

Piano at The Willard Hotel

I had the distinct and honorable pleasure of being asked to play piano at an event hosted by the Museum of the Bible celebrating the 155th anniversary of Julia Ward Howe’s writing of the lyrics to the Battle Hymn of the Republic, which contain many Bible references and was written in the wee hours of November 19th, 1861. To mark the occasion, the Museum of the Bible had an exhibit in the lobby of the Willard Hotel, and had me playing piano off to the side. I played through several Civil War-era tunes, circling back to different versions and motifs of the Battle Hymn. The Willard is an elegant luxury hotel that has been in business since at least the 1860s. In fact, it was in a room there where Julia Ward Howe woke up in the wee hours on the morning and...

House Concert TOMORROW for NY Singer/Pianist Todd Alsup

Tessa and I are thrilled to be hosting a house concert tomorrow night for a Singer/Songwriter from New York City, Todd Alsup. He’ll be sharing songs from his new album Currency, and hopefully a few pop/R&B covers as well! I’ll be opening with a some jazz and a couple of new age pieces from Piano on 24th. We have thoroughly enjoyed Todd’s performances at Redeye Grill, across the street from Carnegie Hall in NYC, because of his soulful interpretation of cover songs and amazing vocal technique. (Indeed, we like some of his covers better that the originals!) Todd has residency at Redeye, so if you’re passing through and want to get a great meal with live music in NY, see if he’s playing! Now back to tomorrow’s house concert....

Musical Director for Sweeney Todd

January was a blur this year! Fresh off of a trip to Peru over the holidays, my wife and I returned home and jumped straight into tech week for a musical we’d been involved in since November: Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street, produced by St. Mark’s Players. Tessa was a soprano in the chorus, and I was Musical Director, conductor, and pianist. It was many hours of work, advanced my music education considerably … and was tons of fun! The cast was comprised of 19 people – 9 principals and 10 in the ensemble. The orchestra I assembled varied between 10 and 12 people, depending on the night. We had a string quartet, percussion, French horn, trumpet, flute, clarinet, and English horn, which I thought made a very nice mix with the...
