Jazz Duo for Birthday Party

Tessa and I had a great time last weekend playing through a good portion of our jazz repertoire as background music for an 80th birthday party. The birthday boy, his wife, and a couple of dozen lifelong friends and guests all enjoyed a best-in-class dinner at Joe’s Crab House while we provided atmosphere and ambiance – and then stuck around for some food of our own!! Big thanks to the hosts for having us...

Valentine’s Day Music at the DoubleTree

Our Valentine’s performance was a total blast! It had all the important elements: great people, amazing venue, and of course, love. We spent the evening singing through nearly all of the love songs we knew – lots of jazz standards, some latin, and some pop as the guests rotated slowly around us, enjoying the music and crystal-clear views of the Pentagon and downtown Washington. I actually played for two different crowds – the weekly Comedy Zone dinner on the 12th floor, then a couple of sets with Tessa in the Skydome. Pictures from both below! It was a great night 🙂

Swing Time – The Musical

I’ve enjoyed playing several shows with Mike Thornton’s (of Capitol Steps) production called Swing Time, which takes place in a radio studio during the second World War. The cast of 3 couples sings and dances through all sorts of swing music from that era, including numbers like In The Mood, Tuxedo Junction, and Sing Sing Sing. The band consists of piano, drums, and bass, and in several places the singers do a really great job mimicking the horn section of a large brass band. It’s quite fun to watch (and play in!), especially if you know the tune. Even if you don’t, you’re bound to recognize something … so come check it out at the Navy Memorial Center in downtown DC! Here’s everything you need to know about Swing Time...

Jazz Festival in Breda, NL

Happily stumbled across the Breda Jazz Festival today! It was set up in the old downtown area, all outdoors and free. There were 16 stages, each packed with listeners holding beer cups and various finger foods. We hardly made it to those groups though as we were pleasantly sidetracked by a couple of local bands playing in the streets. It was very New Orleans – my favorite. The first was called Rue d’Anvers, and we encountered them marching up to an opening in the square where they set up camp and played a few tunes. They had all my favorite parts of New Orleans street music: tuba bass line, multiple horn harmony sections, and spunky solos. Once they wrapped up, we continued on our way and a few more steps later came across Honkers Brass Band. A...
